Nigeria’s Troubling Counter Insurgency Strategy Against Boko Haram

The kidnapping of 110 schoolgirls from Dapchi last month is the latest event to cast doubt on the Nigerian government’s claims that Boko Haram has been technically defeated. Unfortunately, the attack should have come as no surprise. Since 2015, the jihadist group has lost significant territorial control and no longer holds major cities. But as I saw during my fieldwork in Nigeria in January, the jihadist threat is far from gone, and counterinsurgency policies continue to be troubled and troubling.

Rethinking Nigeria’s Paper-tiger Counterterrorism Strategy, Anti-Terrorism Law

Introduction: From been underrated and likened to a band of rag-tag, amateurish, illiterate folks few years ago, the Boko Haram Islamic Sect metamorphosed into the ‘world’s most lethal terrorist group’; deadlier than ISIS, Al-Qaeda. No thanks to the Sect’s unrelenting attacks, the 2015 Global Terrorism Index, GTI, ranked Nigeria as the third most terrorized country in the world. According to the Borno State governor – Kashim Shettima, Boko Haram’s sporadic eight years insurgency has led to the death of 100, 000 and displacement of two million people (IDPs) in northeast Nigeria. The Crises Group believes a famine, food crises is in the offing in northeast Nigeria.

Nigerian Military, Police And Civilian JTF Personnel Indicted in IDPs Sex Scandal

Some Nigerian military, police, and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) personnel and others have been reportedly implicated in the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs camp sex scandal in North East Nigeria.
The policemen and CJTF suspects have been arrested. The Army and the Air Force are expected to surrender their implicated men, Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris said yesterday.

Truck Conveying IDPs Suffer Boko Haram Landmine Explosion in NE Nigeria

A truck conveying internally displaced persons, IDPs, ran into a landmine planted on an highway causing an explosion which injured some of the passengers, officials said.

The Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, ADSEMA, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency will close down all Internally Displaced Persons camps in the state by the end of December 2015.
