Militancy, Political Uncertainty Seen as Key Risks for Nigeria, Others

Sequel Nigeria’s exit from recession in 2017, investor sentiment across West Africa is likely to experience uplift in 2018, a report has stated. The report, however, pointed out that political uncertainty ahead of Nigeria’s 2019 presidential elections and on-going security concerns were among the key risks for businesses operating in the region.

Nigeria Loses 130m Barrels of Crude Oil To Militancy in 2016

Nigeria has lost over 130 million barrels of crude oil from January to November this year to the activities of 32 militant groups in the Niger Delta region since the resurgence of militancy in the oil-producing region in 2015, the Vice-Chairman of the Security Subcommittee of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mr. Shina Bankole, has said.

Not Yet Uhuru; The Ticking Time Bomb In Nigeria’s Niger Delta

Apparently alluding to blistering attacks on crude oil installations and facilities by militant groups in the Niger Delta, Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo recently said, ‘’Nigeria is losing one million barrels of crude oil per say due to vandalism’’. Nigeria’s public space is awash with a raging debate as to whether or not the Nigerian government should ‘negotiate’ with or as some put it, ‘appease’ the Niger Delta militants. While Western governments led by the United States and the United Kingdom recommend ‘dialogue’ as the best way out of the quagmire, President Buhari hitherto seemed unenthusiastic about a dialogue.

Militant Group Adaka Boro Avengers Insists on Niger Delta Republic, Set To Launch Radio Station

Sequel to reports that the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, have agreed to a ‘ceasefire’ to allow for a dialogue with the Nigerian Government, its sister militant group, the Adaka Boro Avengers (ADA) has said it would not engage in any dialogue with the government, and vowed to go ahead with the October 1 declaration of the Niger Delta Republic.

The Niger Delta Avengers today, Sunday, 21st August, 2016, announced a unilateral ceasefire and agreed to negotiate with the Nigerian Government. In a Press release, the militant group laid down terms and conditions of its negotiation and appointed Chief Edwin Clark as its representative.

The Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, insists on going ahead with its plans to declare an independent Niger Delta Republic on October 1st, 2016. In It's latest press release signed by its Spokesperson, Brig. General Mudoch Agbinibo, the NDA says, "The October 1st, declaration of independence is still sacrosanct. If the Nigeria government fails to retrace it’s step by restructuring this country".

Pandemonium, Scores Feared Dead As Military Jets Bombard Lagos, Ogun Creeks in Search of Militants

Punch Newspaper reports that pandemonium ensued on Thursday in the Arepo area of Ogun State and some part of Lagos State after the military bombarded the base of suspected militants in the states.
It was gathered that scores of militants were reportedly killed in the joint military operation which lasted for more than one hour.

As a result of this inertia, scores of Nigerian citizens are randomly murdered, kidnapped daily. While the Nigerian security agencies are overwhelmed, helpless and bereft of pragmatic solutions to the security challenges, the government of the day is strongly averse to taking responsibility; buck-passing and finger-pointing are its stock-in-trade.
