Gunmen Kidnap Army Lieutenant in Lagos, South-West Nigeria

A Nigerian Army lieutenant has been abducted by suspected militants in the Abule Ado area of FESTAC town, Lagos State.

The abducted Army Officer, who was simply identified as Lieutenant Diya was as at Monday evening yet to be released.

The abduction of Lt. Diya was said to have caused serious tension in FESTAC town as soldiers and members of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) commenced a search-and-rescue effort, shooting sporadically.

The shooting was still on going as at the time of filing this report as the military men were operating through the 6th and 7th Avenue.

A resident of the area, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune said “the operation is ongoing now at Abule Ado and FESTAC town simultaneously.”

He added that “the army officer was actually abducted on Saturday and what happened today is that the soldiers reinforced and invaded the base of the militants.”

It was gathered that the lieutenant led a team of soldiers to patrol the FESTAC area on Saturday, when heavily armed men attacked them.

The resident also stated that “for more than two hours, there have been heavy shootings from the soldiers. It started from the 6th Avenue and it is now spreading to the 7th Avenue.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the PRO of the Lagos State Police Command, Dolapo Badmus, failed as calls to her mobile phone were not answered.
