Not less than 3 women were abducted while one pregnant woman was shot dead even as over 100 cattle were rustled in a reprisal attack launched by bandits at Yan’yawa village, Kanoma district in Maru local government area of Zamfara state penultimate Thursday.
According to an eyewitness, Ibrahim Mamman, a resident of Kanoma Town, the bandits numbering about 100 invaded the village at around 12:30 pm.
He said during the operation which lasted for more than three hours, the bandits kidnapped three women, shot one pregnant woman dead, adding that they made away with over 100 cattle, sheep and goats belonging to the communities.
He also said three days before Yan’yawa attack, the bandits besieged Rayau village in a similar merciless attack near Kanoma where they ran away with over 100 cattle and sheep and injuring many residents trying to escape.
He said a volunteer group popularly known as Yansakai trailed the bandits to nearby forest and succeeded in seizing many of the stolen cattle.
On whether the communities had witnessed the presence of security men after the attack, Malam Ibrahim Mamman expressed shock, saying: “As I am talking to you, three days later we have not seen any security personnel be it police, SSS or Army coming to our aid and this bandits have put pear in the minds of every one of us here as we don’t have guarantee of our security conscious particularly during our day to day farming activities.”
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara state police command, ASP Shehu Muhammad, confirmed the incident, saying already a combined team of the police, army and vigilantes had been deployed to the area to trail the culprits.
He denied that four women were kidnapped by the bandits during their operation, stressing that the police were still investigating the matter, calling on the general public to cooperate with the security agencies by providing positive information about the criminals.
