Suspected cultists have killed not less than 15 people in the last two days despite the military onslaught in Ogba Egbema Ndoni council, where the killings took place.
The cultists also carried out killings in Ahoada council, another area where the military is also operating. The state police command confirmed the killings, noting that its intervention prevented the cultists from killing more people.
Eyewitnesses said that the cultists, mainly from the Icelanders and Greenlanders, were carrying out a turf war, with one of them claiming that the military operation in the area favoured a particular political party.
He said that the cultists freely used high calibre weapons in the attacks, while some of them who could not withstand the military fled into the bush.
Meanwhile, the former Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Chibudum Nwuche, condemned the killings, calling on the urging the Inspector- General of Police to save the state from further cult-related killings.
He also urged Governor Nyesom Wike to do more to safeguard lives and property in the affected councils. Speaking through telephone, he said: “Governor Wike as the Chief Security officer of the state should do more to save lives and property. As it stands now, he is not doing enough.”
