Robbers in the wee hours of Wednesday killed a local vigilante while unleashing mayhem on residents of Iju-Ishaga area of Ifako Ijaye, Lagos State.
Two of the robbery suspects were however apprehended by men of the anti-robbery Squad attached to Iju division.
The robbers numbering 20 at about 2am were said to have attacked residents of Nelson Cole, Iyabo Williams, Alafia and Hope streets.
It was gathered that the vigilante group in the area were able to suppress their operation following an alarm that was raised.
A member of the vigilante group identified as Matthew, was reportedly killed with a stone by the robbers after several shots fired at him did not penetrate his body.
The bandits upon sighting police officers patrolling the area opened fire but were overpowered by the fire power of the officers and two of the robbers were arrested.
According to the Imagemaker of Lagos State Police Command, Kenneth Nwosu, the police recovered the following items from the bandits; two locally-made cut-to-size guns, live cartridges, charms and ATM cards, suspected to have been stolen from their victims, and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
While commenting on the incident, Evangelist Elijah Umoh, the Secretary of Alade Olowosokedile Community Development Association in Iju Ishaga, noted thus; “I received a call from one of my tenants that he was hearing some noise in the area and that he suspected they were armed robbers.
“We raised alarm. When the robbers discovered that the security men were all over the place, they started looking for escape route.
“Unfortunately, one of the guards, Matthew, who was a member of Odua Peoples Congress, OPC, was killed.
“This is not the first time robbers would storm this community. It happened two years ago during which we also lost a resident.”
Umoh further urged the government to revisit its abandoned project in the area as it is used as hideouts for criminals.
