‘Nigeria Can Use Computer Forensic Technology To Fight Insurgency’ - CFIN

THE President, Computer Forensic Institute of Nigeria (CFIN), Dr. Peter Olayiwola, has urged the Federal Government to use computer forensic technology in its fight against menace of insurgency in the country.

Olawiyo who disclosed this during media briefing on the 2014 International Digital, Mobile and Computer Forensic conference in Abuja at the weekend, stated
that the field of forensic and cyber-crime investigation is the most important for national security.
 

According to him: “Developed nations are using it effectively and we also in the country must look up to use it. We do not have to reinvent any wheel, the wheel is already there. All we need to do is to open our eyeshadow to decide how to apply the technology.

“What we may not realize is that, in the planning of insurgency, technology is used and it is the field of computer forensic that can be used used to do some intelligence gathering,” he said.
He said that there was a need for the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to change the way in they conduct investigations.
“There must be change of paradigm. Our law enforcement agencies must change the way the conduct investigation. They cannot continue the way they conduct investigations before there is a need for a change.

Speaking further, Olayiwola explained that that the conference was organized to assist in the rapid development of capacity in digital mobile and computer forensics, and cyber security.
“This conference brings together practitioners from diverse fields of enforcement agencies in Nigeria discuss
the relevance of digital, mobile and computer forensics to counter terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria.
“They will learn how to use digital, mobile and computer forensics to tackle and prevent the menace of terrorism, insurgency and cyber attacks in West Africa sub-region.

“Our law-enforcement agents, investigators prosecutors, magistrates, lawyers, legislators, information communication technology and information security professionals, auditors/inspectors accountants and administrators, etc. will greatly benefit from the conference,” he said.
