Fashola To Inaugurate Sex Offenders’ Register For Lagos State

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, will sign an executive order establishing a sex offenders’ register as part of government’s efforts to reduce the rate of sexual and child abuses in the state.

This was made known in a statement by the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team – a group
coordinated by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.

The Coordinator of the team, Mrs. Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, in the statement on Thursday, said the aim of the
register was to provide names and other details of convicted sex offenders in the state in a central
database.

She said, “The database will be accessible to whoever needs information such as school proprietors who want to recruit as a form of background check.

“This policy will also make it compulsory for all school administrators, teachers, and other officials having dealings with children to report any suspected or actual child abuse to the attorney-general.”

According to the statement, the governor will be inaugurating the sex offenders’ register on Monday,
December 1, at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
