Conflating Terrorism And Insurgency

Editor's Note: What if most terrorism isn’t really terrorism? In past decades, much of what we call terrorism today would have been seen as insurgent violence, revolutionary war, or civil war: a group like the Islamic State, which uses tanks as well as suicide bombing, is a prime example of an organization that is wrongly classified as a terrorist group. John Mueller of Ohio State University and Mark Stewart of the University of Newcastle in Australia unpack this definitional confusion and argue that it leads to a gross misunderstanding of the true threat we face.

Amnesty International 'Extremely Worried', Investigating Allegation of Extra-judicial Killing of Biafran Activists in Aba

Amnesty Internation­al (AI), the global hu­man rights body, has stated that supporters of the Indigenous Peoples of Bi­afra (IPOB) have a right to free­dom of expression and freedom of assembly.
The organization also noted that it was still investigating dis­turbing reports of the massacre of unarmed members of IPOB and their alleged burial in a mass grave in Aba, Abia State, by Nigerian se­curity operatives.

Sporadic clashes between nomadic Fulani herdsmen and locals, landowners or farmers in the nook and cranny of Nigeria have claimed thousands of innocent lives, led to loss of properties worth millions of Naira and there seem to be no end in sight to this ugly, routine phenomenon. While Boko Haram overtook ISIS as the world's deadliest terrorist organisation going by fatalities, the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) ranked Fulani Herdsmen as the 4th deadliest terrorist organization in the world in its 2015 ranking. The GTI reckons that, ‘’Fulani militants in the northern part of Nigeria killed as many as 1,229 people in the country in 2014’’.

Fulani Herdsmen Attack Enugu Community Kill Two, 19 Missing

Palpable fear and confusion has gripped Abbi Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Enugu State, following the invasion of the area by Fulani herdsmen who unleashed mayhem on the people, killing a brother and sister apart from razing down about seven houses and several motorcycles. Altogether, 19 persons were declared missing in the community even as several others were also wounded with machetes by the invaders.
